Google does not use Keywords META Tag

By IDGLabs.NET September 24th, 2009

Google has revealed today that they do not pay any attention to the Keywords META tag on webpages / blogs for search engine rankings.

The official announcement by Google’s very own Matt Cutts stated that over the years Google have seen a huge proportion of websites / blogs who merely keyword stuff their META tags or “lift” the same META tags from other popular websites.

He did, however, state that Google do look at and take into account the META Description tag as often that tells them about what the webpage / blog is about.

I think this is an important announcement as Google slowly inform us as to what counts and what does not on search engine rankings. It makes SEO company’s jobs a lot more difficult, however, there is hope that if someone does copy your META tags that they will not benefit from them.

In my eyes, Google aim to make their search engine one of relevance. They are putting primary focus on content than anything else and trust.

The content most relevant to a search query will appear first and the number of backlinks to reputable sites will also count for a lot too as that shows Google that your content is trustworthy.
