Step-by-step instructions to help you safely and easily update to the most recent version of WordPress.
Before you update we need to do a little housekeeping:
First save a copy of all your WordPress files, pages and posts to your hard drive. You do this by clicking on the Tools icon in the left sidebar and then Export. On the next screen click on Download Export File. You might want to create a new Folder on your hard drive where you keep all you Web site files. Name it WP Backup so you know to save all backup files for WP there (and you’ll know where to find them if you need them). It is a good idea to back up this file once a month anyway regardless if an update is needed.
Second, backup your WordPress database. There is a nifty plugin that makes this process a no brainer, WP-DBManager. This plugin is also a must have for repairing and optimizing your database (which you should be doing minimally monthly to keep things running smoothly).
To be safe, deactivate all plugins before upgrading.

WordPress 3.1.4 is available now and is a maintenance and security update for all previous versions. This release fixes an issue that could allow a malicious Editor-level user to gain further access to the site. In phpMyAdmin, select your WordPress database from the drop-down menu on the left. The page will refresh and the database’s tables will be displayed on it. Open the SQL tab (look at the top navigation bar).
In the text field write the following SQL query:
UPDATE `wp_users` SET `user_pass` = MD5( ‘your_new_password’ ) WHERE `wp_users`.`user_login` = “your_admin_username”;
“your_new_password” – replace this with the new password you wish to use.
“your_admin_username” – replace this with the username the password should be updated for.
Once you are ready, click on the GO button to submit the query. If everything goes fine without errors, you should be able to login to WordPress with the new password.

The WordPress development team has released version 3.0.3 of the popular open source blogging and publishing platform, a security update for the 3.0.x branch of WordPress.
According to the developers, the update addresses a privilege escalation issue in the remote publishing interface that, under certain circumstances, could have allowed Author and Contributor-level users to improperly edit, publish or delete posts.
Reportedly, the issue only affects sites that have remote publishing enabled – remote publishing is disabled by default, but may be enabled when publishing from a mobile client, such as one of the WordPress mobile applications.
One of the most common problems people contact me with regarding their WordPress blogs is the permalinks turning all their pages into 404 page not found errors. By default WordPress will link your blog entries as /?p=## but most people would rather the URL contain the post title, date or both. You go into the admin page, then settings and finally permalinks.
Once you change it, all your pages appear broken. Answer: Well first of all, don’t freak out, your pages are still there! The problem is most likely that WordPress was unable to write to your .htaccess file. You need to make sure that this is writable. In some FTP programs this file will be hidden. Read full story
