MOBILE SEO: TO BE OR NOT TO BE

When will it be the year of the mobile? Media people have been asking this question for several years.
More importantly, from my perspective, will mobile SEO become a major part of my role within Search? With what seems like a major reluctance to commission small screen pages and/or a convergence of browser developers shoe-horning the desktop web on to my small screen; mobile SEO is fast becoming a speciality that was never required.

Mobile SEO Best Practices

Today, the mobile web is at the same stage in its evolution. It’s a mystical time again: nobody’s too sure what the killer apps are going to be and which online businesses models are going to win (aside from gambling and porn)… but, based on the lessons we learned the first time around, one thing’s for certain: search and searchengine optimization (SEO) is going to be critical to establishing the mobile web.

Other people will have to wait at least until Spring 2010, when it believes that Google will be adding more countries to its smartphone lineup.

It was still possible to use Google Analytics to track smartphones, to some extent, but my unscientific test showed their solution wasn’t as accurate as mobile analytics packages that didn’t rely on JavaScript for tracking.

4 services for building a quickie mobile website

Don’t get me wrong: It may be a marvel of beauty and interactivity when viewed on a 20-inch monitor, or even a notebook computer’s puny 13-incher, but on a phone? That’s where it looks, well, let’s just use euphemisms, like “hideous” and “revolting.” It’s not because it’s not well-designed. It’s because it’s not designed for viewing on the phone, where the text of the typical website is illegible and the viewing experience a frustrating one.
